History of Vietnamese language :

The earliest known writing system used in Vietnam was the Chữ Nôm script, which was based on Chinese characters and used from the 13th century to the early 20th century. Chữ Nôm was primarily used for literary and scholarly purposes, and was not widely understood by the common people.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Catholic missionaries developed a new script called Quốc Ngữ, which was based on the Latin alphabet and included diacritical marks to indicate tones and certain vowel sounds. Quốc Ngữ quickly became popular among the Vietnamese people, and was eventually adopted as the official writing system of Vietnam.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Vietnamese language underwent significant changes as a result of French colonization and Western influence. Many new words were borrowed from French and other Western languages, and the language was further standardized through the use of dictionaries and grammar books.

Today, Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam and is spoken by over 95 million people worldwide. It is a tonal language with six different tones, which can make it difficult for non-native speakers to learn. Despite its complex history and linguistic features, Vietnamese continues to be an important and vibrant language in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Vietnamese Alphabet

The Vietnamese alphabet, also known as the Vietnamese script, is based on the Latin alphabet with the addition of diacritical marks to indicate tones and certain vowels. Here is a list of the 29 letters of the Vietnamese alphabet:

A, Ă, Â, B, C, D, Đ, E, Ê, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, Ô, Ơ, P, Q, R, S, T, U, Ư, V, X, Y

The letters A, E, O, and U can have any of the three diacritical marks (a circumflex (^), a grave accent (`), or a tilde (~)), which indicate different tones. The letter Đ is a unique letter in the Vietnamese alphabet and does not have an equivalent in the English alphabet. The letters Ă and  represent distinct vowel sounds in Vietnamese, while the letter Ê represents a combination of the sounds "e" and "ê". The letters Ơ and Ư represent distinct vowel sounds that do not have equivalents in the English language.

Vietnamese Consonants

B, C, D, Đ, G, H, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, X

Some of these consonants can also be combined with the diacritical mark "huyền" ( ˜ ) to indicate a different sound, such as "ch" (pronounced like "tch"), "nh" (pronounced like "ny"), and "ng" (pronounced like "ng" in "sing"). Additionally, there are some consonant clusters in Vietnamese, such as "ph", "th", "tr", and "kh". Some of these consonant clusters also have their own unique sounds in Vietnamese. For example, "ph" is pronounced like "f", and "kh" is pronounced like the "ch" in "loch".

Vowels in Vietnamese

Vietnamese has a relatively complex system of vowels, with a total of 11 vowels in the standard language. The vowels can be divided into three groups: simple vowels, double vowels, and diphthongs.

Simple vowels: There are five simple vowels in Vietnamese, represented by the letters A, E, I, O, and U. Each vowel can be pronounced with one of six different tones, indicated by diacritical marks:

  • A: ă, â, or a (with tone marks)
  • E: ê or e (with tone marks)
  • I: i (with tone marks)
  • O: ô or o (with tone marks)
  • U: ư or u (with tone marks)

  • AU: pronounced like the "ow" in "how"
  • OI: pronounced like the "oy" in "boy"

Diphthongs: There are two diphthongs in Vietnamese, which are formed by combining a simple vowel with the semivowel Y:
